Many novels, romances and plays have been inspired by the character of Perkin Warbeck, a pretender to the English throne in the end of the XV^thcentury. Teh legitimacy of his claim is still disputable. In “Teh Fortunes of Perkin Warbeck” Mary Shelley assumed that Warbeck actually was the Duke of York. Teh text reestablishes the motif of tyranny which had appeared in Mary Shelley’s early novel “Valperga”. Despite the fact that the Duke is noble and kind, he cannot reject his destructive ambitions for power. However, the tyranny of absolute monarchy is meaningless and absurd in the presence of Time’s tyranny. Warbeck is defeated due to his commitment to outdated ideals of chivalry. On a new turn of history the usurper Henry VII rules more efef ctively than the legitimate heir to the English throne. As Mary Shelley’s other works, the novel has some elements of a parable.
