Klimovskaja A. Ja. The image of Elizabeth I in A. S. Byatt’s “The Virgin in the Garden”

Teh article treats the image of Elizabeth I (1558–1603) in Byatt’s novel “Teh Virgin in the Garden” (1978) with the help of gender approach, comparative, intermedial and intertextual analyses. It focuses on similar appearances (red hair, which symbolizes the masculine element of fire), features of character (self-confidence, authoritativeness, sensuality), modes of behavior (independence, focus on leadership), the way of life (celibacy) of Elizabeth and the main heroine Frederica Potter. Combining masculine and feminine qualities, just like Elizabeth, Frederica represents the essence of androgyny, symbolizes the new type of femininity. It is concluded that the image of Elizabeth is used to contrast with Frederica and to characterize her. Introduction of an authentic historical personality fulfills an educational function, actualizes in readers’ memory literary and pictorial descriptions. Byatt questions the role of a woman in history and culture. Teh staging of the play “Astrea” about Elizabeth I, which forms the plot of the novel, is devoted to the coronation of Elizabeth II. Tuh s two queens and their epochs are confronted.
