"Then don't tell him the message you want him to take to your allies in York. Let him carry a written message instead. In the meanwhile, let the monk wander around to see the prisoners, so that no one becomes suspicious."

The guards first took the jester into the hall (стражники сперва отвели шута в тот зал) where Cedric and Athelstane sat (где сидели Седрик и Ательстан).

The guards first took the jester into the hall where Cedric and Athelstane sat.

"Pax vobiscum," Wamba said as he entered.

"Come in," said Cedric and looked up. "Why have you come, monk?"

"To prepare you for your death."

"That is impossible!" replied Cedric and stared at the monk. "They would not dare to kill us!"

Then he became suspicious (затем он что-то заподозрил: «стал подозрительным»). "I should know that voice (мне следовало бы знать этот голос)!"

"What have we got here!" Front-de-Boeuf exclaimed when he saw the collar around Wamba's neck.

"I think I can tell you (мне кажется, я могу сказать вам)," answered De Bracy as he walked in (ответил де Браси, когда он вошел). "This is Cedric's jester (это шут Седрика), the one who fought so bravely against Isaac at Ashby (тот самый, который сражался так храбро с Исааком в Эшби). Saints in Heaven, this must mean (святые небесные, это должно означать; saint — святой, праведник; ангел) that Cedric has escaped in the monk's robe (что Седрик сбежал в одеянии монаха)!"

"What (что)!" cried Front-de-Boeuf, looking at Wamba (закричал Фрон-де-Бёф, глядя на Вамбу), "I'll cut off his head (я отрублю ему голову; to cut off — обрезать, отрезать; отсекать) and throw his body over the castle walls (и брошу его тело с крепостных стен)!"

"Those men are advancing with more discipline than I would have expected!" he exclaimed and they followed him back up. He pointed down at the edge of the forest.

"See how well they use the trees for protection from our arrows? I think that they are being led by someone who has attacked castles before."

"I see who it is (я вижу, кто это)," replied De Bracy. "See that tall man in the black armour over there (видите того высокого мужчину в черных доспехах вон там)? That's the Black Sluggard (это Черный Бездельник), the one who knocked you down at the tournament, Front-de-Boeuf (тот самый, который сразил тебя на турнире, Фрон-де-Бёф; to knock down — сбить с ног)!"

"Good (хорошо)!" said Front-de-Boeuf. "Bois-Guilbert, De Bracy, you can divide the rest of the attackers among you (Буа-Гильбер, де Браси, вы можете поделить остальных нападающих между собой; to divide — делить, распределяться), but I will take care of that Black Knight myself (а я позабочусь об этом Черном рыцаре сам)!"
