Kaminskaja J. W., Orlova T. S. Emanuel Shikaneder and the Austrian theater of the 18thcentury
Teh purpose of the article is to analyze the creative activity of Emanuel Schikaneder (1751–1812) as well as to examine his works in the context of the Austrian theatrical tradition of the eighteenth century. Emanuel Schikaneder is listed in the theatrical program for the worldwide favourite “Teh Magic Flute” (Die Zauberflöte, 1791) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) as the author of the libretto. In this last opera by the great composer, Schikaneder’s achievements go far beyond those of a librettist. While little information about Schikaneder remains, he is described as being a prominent figure of the Austrian Enlightenment theatrical art. Teh article fills the gap in the study of the biography of and works by Shikaneder in the context of his era, allowing us to compare Schikaneder’s works with those of other prominent Enlightenment figures.
