Zhukov A. P., Ferreira R. B. Saint Petersburg as an image of a collective personality in the novel “Mother’s Son” by Bernardo Carvalho: A view from Brazil

Abstract: the aim of the research is to analyze Bernardo Carvalho’s novel “mother’s Son” (“O filho da mãe”, 2009) in order to find out how the urban space of St Petersburg, where the novel’s plot unfolds, is built in the artistic plane, revealing cultural and symbolic codes from the point of view of the semiotics of culture, the city as a text, according to the concept of research By V. N. Toporov. This method of analysis explores the fictional locus as an element that combines various cultural codes and characters that represent urban culture, as well as poetic thought, taking into account the mentality of the people. Tuh s, the artistic image of Saint Petersburg in Bernardo Carvalho’s novel difef rs from the locus of the real city, as well as the image that exists in Russian literature, in particular, in the works of Gogol. In addition, from the point of view of an outsider, St. Petersburg acquires the connotation of an alien culture. Teh study is based on the statement of M. Berman on the unreality and ghostliness of the city, and also draws as a methodological base the works of Yu. M. Lotman and B. A. Uspensky and others in order to extract artistic elements of the text related to the topographical, architectural, historical and social description of St Petersburg.

Keywords: Bernardo Carvalho; Mother’s Son; Saint Petersburg; semiotics of culture; city text.
