Antsyferova O. Yu. Biographical narrative in “metamodernist” novel “How to be both” by Ali Smith

Ali Smith’s novel “How to be both” (2014) is analyzed with special attention to the historical and biographical narratives in it, which helps to reconsider the postmodernist interpretation of the text prevailing in Russian literary criticism. Instruments of artistic representation of the Renaissance artist Francesco del Cossa correlates with the worldview and aesthetics of Ali Smith, with her transmedia and narratological experiments. Teh metamodernist interpretation of Smith’s novel, inful ential in the West European countries, is complemented by reflection on the genre hermeneutics. It is concluded that the figure of Francesco del Cossa is represented more by narrative means than with the help of traditional biographical tools, and also through a combination of mimeticity with metareferentiality. Teh author’s intentionality is set on involving the reader into active practices of reading, introtextual analogy of which may be found in life and art interosculation, helping the protagonists to overcome loneliness, trauma and mourning.
